Fried Mozzarella

The Italian Kitchen

Mozzarella sticks are one of the most popular appetizers – who can resist the oozing, melted cheese goodness and the crisp, satisfying exterior texture?

You’ll find them everywhere from chain restaurants to authentic Italian eateries. But there’s nothing better than making your own fried mozzarella sticks at home – especially with Il Villagio.

When using real mozzarella rather than prepackaged string cheese, you get to decide what shapes to make. Sticks are great, but so are balls and squares. Just make sure whatever you shape them into is small enough to fully submerge in hot oil to cook evenly. Canola or vegetable oils are best.

When the mozzarella is shaped, it’s time to coat with breadcrumbs. Use panko, with a bit of parsley and oregano mixed in. Coat each cheese piece in flour first, then an egg wash. Dip in the breadcrumbs, and you’re ready to fry!

Wait a few minutes for your oil to get hot – sprinkle a few breadcrumbs in the oil, if they sizzle, it’s ready to rock. Mozzarella sticks cook fast – about three minutes to get a lovely golden-brown and crisp look. Serve with a side of marinara sauce and savor!
